Each class is two hours long. Classes are held once a week for six weeks. Schedules will be emailed upon enrollment. One-Book Bootcamp classes last 2-3 weeks, but may vary depending on the length of the book.
During every class, we will have a discussion regarding the at-home reading. Following the discussion, we will do a craft or project pertaining to the book. For example, for Flat Stanley, we will be making life-sized self-portraits! We will also have a reading and/or writing lesson appropriate to your child's grade level. These will consist of everything from phonics and sound blending to paragraph structure. Each class will conclude with independent reading. If weather and time permit, we will also take an occasional hike or visit the farm to feed the donkeys!
Each six-week session is $389. One-Book Bootcamp classes are available for $99.
Yes! Each six-week session will have a new unique book list and schedule.
Books are included! They will be provided on the first day of class. Students are welcome to keep their books once the six-week session is complete.
Just their books and themself! A notebook and writing utensils are always good to have on hand, but are not necessary. Any materials needed for activities will be provided.
Each course requires independent reading, but with additional support at home and in class, Story Scouts may be able to accommodate your child who is still working on fluency. Reading assessments are available upon request to determine which class is right for your child. At a minimum, 6-year-olds must be familiar with all the letter sounds and recognize sight words.
Yes. Each session has a unique schedule and book list, so there is no repeat content. If you do not see the sign up for a future session, it is coming soon. Book lists will become available a few weeks before each session begins.
No matter your child's grade level, reading skills vary according to numerous factors. For younger second graders, I highly recommend parents review the books ahead of time and ensure your child is on pace with the content. Children are expected to read independently with minimal support. If your child falls in between the grade groups, I can assess their reading level and recommend the best class for them. Older or advanced students will still be able to enjoy the books and content - discussions are passion based, so no matter how "easy" the book may be for your child, this program will still lead to enrichment!
Yes! Age guidelines are only recommendations. Children outside of the recommended age range of each group are still welcome, pending reading level. The books we read in the Grades 4 & 5 group are appropriate for older kids as well! Enrollment in a six-week Book Club includes a free 15-minute reading assessment, which will provide more guidance.
To schedule a reading assessment to see which class is best for your child, email admin@story-scouts.com. Enrollment in a six-week Book Club session includes a free reading assessment. Assessments usually take about 15-20 minutes and consist of a brief review of age-appropriate material. Students will read short passages aloud, allowing me to assess fluency and reading level, and provide guidance as to which class would be the right fit. I am also happy to provide general guidance regarding your child's reading development, based on my observations.
Drop off begins at 3:15 and class will begin between 3:30-3:40. Pick up is no later than 5:40 p.m. Parents will be charged $15 for every additional 10 minutes they are early to drop off or late to pick up.
Depending on the circumstances, I will accept checks, Zelle, or PayPal. If you would like to pay via an alternative method, your child’s slot will only be held once payment is received, so reach out to set something up with me ASAP!
